Memorial to Lancaster Bomber PB565
On the 15th April 1945 the World War Two Lancaster Bomber PB565 crashed near to Owston Ferry killing all 8 men aboard. The Bomber was noted to be flying at 3000 feet when it suddenly nosed over. As the angle of the dive increased it began to break apart before finally impacting near to the village of Owston Ferry. Due to restrictions in reporting incidents during the War, families of the crewmen were given very little details as to what happened. Three of the men were taken and buried at Harrogate Stonefall Cemetery and the rest were buried privately. This has led to descendants not knowing why, how or where their relatives died. Recently a local group raised money to erect a memorial to the men involved in this tragic event. It can be found just outside of Owston Ferry and gives detailed information on the crewmen as well as possible reasons for the crash. It is an important local memorial to ensure we do not forget the sacrifices made.
