Here we can see the cast of the Belton village play ‘Murder in Hatton Garden’ circa 1936. They are in front of Belton All Saints Church of England primary school on the High Street, Belton. Lucy Kelsey played the title role in this play and can be seen in the centre of the second row wearing a brimmed hat with a feather in it. The juniors performed the play ‘Robin Hood’. From the 1920’s onwards there was a push to encourage local villages across the country to put on plays. It was hoped to promote community engagement, enjoyment for those watching and taking part and as a way of preserving village life and local dialects. A playwright competition was also set up as a way of encouraging people to create characters to preserve local traditions and dialects.
