This image shows the south front of Hirst Priory located in the parish of Belton. It was taken in 1987 as part of its grade II listed survey. It is an 18th Century country house which has been built on the site of a 12th Century Augustinian priory known as Hyrst Priory. The land was originally given by Nigel d’ Albini, the father of Roger de Mowbray, to the Cannons of St. Oswald at Nostell Priory. They set up and built the Augustinian priory on this land. The original moat from this period still exists. After the dissolution of the monasteries the priory was granted to John Earl of Warren. It has later been demolished and the building we see today has been built on the site. The priory is today used as a wedding and events venue.
